Race to the Sun
an Internet Exclusive
Five days, two thousand miles across seven states, in a British roadster, in winter. Needless to
say, I had some concerns about this trip. I was thrilled to take delivery, of course: a 1971 MGB
mechanically restored by my uncle, Bob Rittenhouse, of Berthoud, Colorado. But driving the car to
my Florida home between late winter storms was another prospect altogether.

The tires crunched on an inch of fresh snow as we rolled out of Bob's garage, tappets hammering
away as the twin SU carbs gulped in the frigid air. The temperature crawled its way up to near six
degrees in the early morning sun. We drove slowly down Colorado's country roads, but snow still
blew in through a gap between the hood and windscreen, sprinkling the dash with a layer of frost.
Every few miles we had to stop at a crossroads. Each time, the car stalled.
